Rare Six-Quart Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Shorebird Decoration, Stamped "NEW YORK STONEWARE CO. / FORT EDWARD, N.Y.", circa 1875, cylindrical jug with tooled spout, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a crested bird with long legs and neck, standing atop a stylized ground. Decoration includes a ringed-neck and highly unusual tufted tail and abstract feather details to back. This bird, the first of its kind that we have seen from Fort Edward, may represent a shorebird or possibly a sandhill crane. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. A folky figural motif with an expressive posture to the bird. A 5/8" lamp hole drilled in underside. A small base chip and tiny spout nick.
