Rare Small-Sized Stoneware Jug with Alkaline Glaze, Incised "GL", Garlington Lucas, Henry County, Alabama, mid 19th century, squat-shaped jug with tooled spout and high-arching handle, the surface covered in a mottled brown alkaline glaze. Shoulder hand-incised with the script initials, "GL," for Henry County, AL potter, Garlington Lucas, who, according to Joey Brackner's Alabama Folk Pottery, was born in Edgefield County, South Carolina in 1821 and moved to Henry County, AL by 1842, where he established a pottery in the Screamer community (Brackner, p. 97). A signed churn, illustrated on p. 98 of Brackner, bears a related signature with conjoined initials. A fine example of signed ware made during the westward migration of Edgefield-born potters. Desirable size. Spout chips. Otherwise excellent condition. H 7 3/8".
