Rare Six-Gallon Open-Handled Stoneware Jar with Alkaline Glaze, Stamped "JBL", Jesse Bradford Long, Crawford County, GA, circa 1860, large-sized, ovoid jar with flared rim and two open applied handles at the shoulder, the surface covered in a brown alkaline glaze. Incised "6" at shoulder. Impressed "JBL" on one handle for Crawford County, GA potter, Jesse Bradford Long. According to John Burrison's Roots of a Region: Southern Folk Culture, Long, who was in his fifties when the Civil War broke out, served as a home guard captain and produced chamberpots and other wares for Confederate hospitals. An approximately 6" x 3 1/2" reglued section at base/underside with a faint 5" vertical crack extending from it. A 1 1/4" rim chip. A hairline in one lower handle terminal and a small chip to same handle. An approximately 2" faint hairline below same handle. H 17".
