Rare Five-Gallon Stoneware Churn with Cobalt Lion Decoration, Stamped "J. BURGER, JR. / ROCHESTER, N.Y.", circa 1885, semi-ovoid churn with tooled shoulder, flared collar, and applied lug handles, decorated with a large slip-trailed design of a lion striding atop a stylized ground. Strong detail throughout in the classic Burger style, including a long flowing mane, goatee, and striped and spotted highlights to the body. This example, featuring one of the most prized figural subjects in American stoneware, depicts the animal in a vivid cobalt slip less commonly seen in John Burger, Jr. products. New Rochester stoneware discoveries of this quality are considered very unusual. Provenance: A recently-surfaced example, which descended in the family of the consignor. Excellent condition with a shallow 1" chip to collar. H 18 3/16".
