Rare Earthenware Figure of a Lion, attributed to John Fritz, Philadelphia, PA, late 19th century, hand-modeled figure of a reclining lion with incised facial features and paws, the mane and tail with profuse applied clay coleslaw, the surface covered in an olive glaze with brown spattering. Two incised initials or insignias on underside. The distinctive glaze and light color of the clay on this figure indicates a connection to a smaller extant lion figure, incised on the underside, "J. Fritz". Both this lion and the smaller signed example were made at the same pottery as a number of surviving rustic-form mugs, some bearing the initials "J.F." or signature, "John Fritz / 5th R. SOMERSET ST. / PHIL". Excellent condition with very minor wear. L 6 1/2".
