Scarce Eight-Gallon Stoneware Churn with Elaborate Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "J. WEAVER.", Beaver, PA origin, circa 1865, large-sized, semi-ovoid churn with heavily-tooled shoulder, ribbed lug handles, and tall collar with squared rim, decorated with a large sweeping vine bearing six open-centered fuchsia blossoms. Shoulder impressed with "J. WEAVER" maker's mark above an eight-gallon capacity mark. Brushed cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Exceptional size and desirable form, featuring strong Western PA brushwork. Significant cracks to underside, one of which continues 14 1/2" up side of churn, another that continues approximately 8 3/4" up front of churn, and a third which forms a tight spider crack to bottom half of churn's reverse side. Some additional tight lines to surface. Heavy flakes to interior base from use. H 19 3/4".
