Rare One-Gallon Vertical-Handled Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Drape-and-Tassel Decoration, Stamped "COMMERAWS STONEWARE", Manhattan, NY origin, circa 1800, ovoid jar with footed base, tooled shoulder, and applied vertical handles, decorated on the front and reverse with an impressed and cobalt-highlighted drape-and-tassel design. Impressed with the maker's marks of the important free African-American Lower East Side stoneware potter, Thomas W. Commeraw ("COMMERAWS" on the front and "STONEWARE" on the reverse). A hairline across underside, extending 2 7/8" onto reverse, where it forms a Y. In-the-firing chipping to base.
