Extremely Rare Anna Pottery Oversized Salt-Glazed Stoneware Figure of a Frog, attributed to Wallace and Cornwall Kirkpatrick, Anna, IL, circa 1885, hand-modeled figure of a seated frog on wheel-thrown mound base with stippled incising in the Anna style. Frog includes original glass eyes affixed to bulging sockets and hand-incised details to mouth and feet. Figure and base covered in original dark-green paint, as seen on Anna Pottery's frog mugs, frog inkwells, and molded frog pitchers, applied over a bright gray, salt-glazed surface. An outstanding and imposing folk sculpture, among the largest renderings of a frog known by the Kirkpatrick brothers. Likely used as a doorstop or large paperweight. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, which recently surfaced in the Midwestern U.S. Excellent condition with some visually-appealing wear to paint, which reveals areas of underlying glossy salt glaze. H 4 3/4" ; Diameter 4 7/8".
