Kirkpatrick Family Archive, 19th and early 20th centuries, second half 19th century, collection of early photographs and documents related to Anna Pottery founder, Cornwall Elihu Kirkpatrick I (1814-1890). Lot includes the personal photo album of Amy Vance Kirkpatrick, wife of Cornwall Kirkpatrick, with inscription on inner cover, "Mrs. Amy Kirkpatrick / Anna / Union Co. / Ills / Nov 6th 1870", which contains a number of carte-de-visites and a few tintypes of Kirkpatrick family members; one carte-de-visite, probably depicts Cornwall Kirkpatrick I (1814-1890) seated beside his wife, Amy Vance Kirkpatrick, signed on reverse "E.C. McGAHEY, / PHOTOGRAPHER, / Main st., opp. Sherman house, ANNA, ILL"; a second carte-de-visite, possibly depicts Cornwall Kirkpatrick leaning against a railing, possibly with brother, Wallace Kirkpatrick (1828-1896), signed "FROM / WALTER & HEUCK'S / GALLERY. / Successors to PORTER/ 106 Fourth St., Cincinnati."; one tintype depicts daughter of Cornwall Kirkpatrick I, Ann Kirkpatrick (1853-1932), inscribed on front "1870 / Annie Kirkpatrick" and on reverse "Annie Kirkpatrick / November 6, 1870, / Anna, Illin" along with the words "shoo fly", a term also found on Anna Pottery's famous figural-decorated "shoo fly jugs"; a photo, separate from the album, depicts an elderly Cornwall Kirkpatrick, signed "MOSHER'S", circa 1880, one of the most well-known images of Kirkpatrick, which was used by his daughter, the academically-trained artist, Amy R. "Birdie" Kirkpatrick (1862-1935), to produce an oil painting and drawing of her father during the late 19th century; additional photos, including two daguerreotypes depicting a husband and wife, one with two children included; two related framed tintypes of Amy Vance Kirkpatrick and children, one with note on reverse, reading "Mrs. Cornwall Elihu Kirkpatrick I / left to right William- Anna- / Cornwall Elihu II / Amy Vance / Aunt Bertie(sic) the painter / Not born yet in picture"; and two large oval tintypes, possibly depicting Amy Vance Kirkpatrick and husband, Cornwall Kirkpatrick. Documents include the following: an April 2, 1915 letter from the University of Illinois to C.E. Kirkpatrick giving the analysis of limestone at a particular location and an April 8, 1915 response from Cornwall's son; a contract dated March 3, 1917, one page plus reverse, giving the option for C.K. Kirkpatrick to purchase clay rights from Wallace and Louise Kirkpatrick for $5,000 (note the 1917 value of $3,600 today is $104,995 based on the Bureau of Labor Statistics on-line calculator); a contract dated March 3, 1917, 3 pages; front, reverse of the last page has a notary. This contract is signed by eight Kirkpatricks and two others, giving exclusive right to mine clay, etc., and establishes a royalty of $1.50 per ton for no less than $3,600 per year.
