Extremely Rare Black-Painted Chinoiserie Stoneware Porch Vase with Applied Dragon Motif, attributed to Wallace and Cornwall Kirkpatrick, Anna Pottery, Anna, IL, circa 1885, cylindrical vase with semi-squared rim and original drain hole in underside, the surface decorated with two hand-modeled, applied, and incised dragon motifs. Two additional intentionally incomplete designs of dragons and/or their body parts appear on each side of the vase, evidently applied to suggest the dragons' bodies are moving in and out of the vase's surface. Surface covered in an old black paint. Inspired by Chinese porcelain of the period, this work is the only example of this style by the Kirkpatricks that we have seen. Provenance: From a recently-surfaced collection of Anna Pottery, which descended in the family of Cornwall Kirkpatrick. Literature: For a related example featuring a relief butterfly and angel motif, see Mathis, The Family, Kilns & Stoneware of Kirkpatrick, p. 241. Significant losses to applied decoration and exfoliation to surface. H 11 7/8".
