Rare One-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jug, Stamped "WOODBRIDGE, / BIDWELL / & CO.", probably Manchester, CT origin, circa 1820's, ovoid jug with heavily-tooled spout decorated with brushed dashes around the maker's mark. The form and decoration appear to be modeled after Clarkson Crolius, Sr. stoneware from Manhattan, NY. Few examples stamped with the mark of this Manchester, CT-based merchant firm exist, and it is possible that Woodbridge, Bidwell, & Co. did not own their own stoneware manufactory, but instead had these products made by some other Connecticut- or New York-based potter. It seems more likely, however, that the surviving examples bearing this mark were indeed made by a small shop that Woodbridge, Bidwell, & Co. had founded, as other merchants on the east coast sometimes did. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor decades ago. Base chips. A minor nick to handle. Typical small in-the-firing flaws to surface and some relatively minor surface flakes.
