Fine Six-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar with Stenciled Rose Motifs, Stenciled "BAYLESS MCCARTHEY & CO. / LOUISVILLE . KY.", Greensboro, PA origin, circa 1875, semi-ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, featuring large stenciled rose motifs above "BAYLESS McCARTHEY & CO." advertising. Diamond-shaped stenciled banners flank the "& CO." of the advertising. Base with bold-faced stenciled "6", flanked by additional rose stenciling. Freehand stripe decoration to shoulder and base. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Excellent stenciled decoration and desirable Kentucky advertising. Very nice condition. Some surface lines, primarily to bottom half of jar on reverse, not visible on interior. A minor chip or in-the-firing ping to interior of rim. A tight in-the-firing line to terminal of right handle. A minor chip to right handle, possibly in-the-firing. A tiny stone ping near base on front. H 16 1/2".
