Two-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar with Stenciled Eagle Motif, attributed to Stephen H. Ward, West Brownsville, PA, circa 1870, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder and flattened rim, decorated with a stenciled design of a spread-winged Federal eagle with shield, clutching an olive branch and arrows in its talons. Stylized stenciled foliate design above. Freehand stripe below rim. Base with stenciled "2", flanked by scrolled and spotted stenciling. Provenance: Collection of Harry Meyer, McDonald, PA. A 6 1/2" Y-shaped crack on underside, continuing 7 1/4" up front of jar, where it forms a faint Y. A small rim chip. Some light staining to front.
