Exceptional Redware Flowerpot with Copper and Manganese Decoration, Stamped "SOLOMON BELL / STRASBURG, / Va.", circa 1875, large-sized flowerpot with doubly-coggled rim and attached crimped saucer, the surface dipped in a whitish slip and decorated on the front and reverse with a brushed hanging swag-and-floral motif featuring lead-and-copper-glazed swags and a central flower, separated by matte manganese slip swags. This flowerpot is among the finest Strasburg redware examples of the form that we have ever offered, featuring unusually bold copper swag treatment. The concentration of lead in the large, outer swags is so heavy, it has diluted the underlying slip, revealing the orange clay below and creating a colorful, lustrous surface mixed with the green copper colorant. Strong condition for this form and maker. Wear to top of rim and protruding rim molding, heavy in places. Light wear to crimping of saucer. No wear to slip and decoration on body of flowerpot. H 8".
