Outstanding Seven-Gallon Double-Handled Jug with Profuse Cobalt Decoration, Inscribed "FOWLER'S. / Peach Brandy / 1856", Ohio origin, 1856, large-sized, ovoid jug with tooled shoulder, wide-mouthed spout, and applied handles, the front decorated with the stenciled and freehand inscription, "FOWLER'S. / Peach Brandy / 1856". Base of cooler with large, wreath-like plant, flanking the date, which is further accented with a series of graduated and dotted strokes surrounding it. Shoulder area with large four-petaled floral motif surrounded by a wreath, flanked by dashes. Reverse decorated with a boldly-brushed flowering plant motif featuring flowers, oval leaves, and wavy brushwork, emanating from a splayed-leaf base, as seen on the cooler's front. Brushed cobalt highlights to lower handle terminals. Impressive in its size, lavish top-to-bottom brushwork, and use of stenciled and freehand inscriptions, this jug is the finest Ohio example of the form that we have ever offered.
