Fine Glazed Redware Ale Mug, Stamped "JOHN BELL", Waynesboro, PA origin, circa 1840-1880, ovoid form with footed base, tall collar with tooled rim, and spurred strap handle, the surface profusely-decorated with manganese sponging and covered in a clear lead glaze. Impressed "JOHN BELL" on shoulder. Featuring a vivid luster to the glazed surface, this mug is among the best Bell examples of the form that we have ever offered. Minor wear to midsection. Light wear to spur of handle. Two extremely faint lines from rim, each measuring approximately 2", one including a tiny 1/4" x 3/8" reglued surface flake at rim. Typical minor rim wear. Some whitish residue to interior. Three small kiln furniture marks on underside. H 7".
