Rare One-Gallon Stoneware Batter Pail with Cobalt Cherries Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG", PA origin, circa 1865, ovoid form with tubular pouring spout, handle at base on reverse, and applied clay ears fitted with a wood-and-wire bail handle. Reverse decorated with a brushed design of three cherries hanging from a leafy stem. Base of spout decorated with a brushed wreath design. Brushed cobalt highlights to ears. Reverse impressed with Cowden & Wilcox maker's mark. Includes tin covers. Batter pail survives in rarely-found excellent, essentially as-made condition with a some spots of fry to heavier areas of cobalt and a 1/2" in-the-firing contact mark / surface flake to left of decoration.
