Extremely Rare Half-Gallon Stoneware Pitcher with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "SAM'L. I. IRVINE, / NEWVILLE PA.", circa 1865, ovoid pitcher with footed base and tooled rim, decorated on the front with a brushed flower emanating from a leafy stem. Cobalt swag decoration to sides of collar and flanking the spout. Brushed cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Impressed with Samuel Irvine mark on reverse. Few signed pitchers from this desirable Cumberland County, PA pottery are known. Provenance: Purchased by the consignor in 1979. A large, tight spider crack to left of decoration, extending 1" onto underside. A network of tight spider cracks to reverse, extending from base to left and right of lower handle terminal. A spout chip. Some light surface wear. Two minor in-the-firing pings to body. H 9 1/4".
