Exceptional Five-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Double Game Bird Decoration, Stamped "PENN YAN", NY State origin, second half 19th century, large-sized, ovoid jug with semi-rounded spout, decorated with a slip-trailed design of facing game birds with well-detailed feathers, perched on a tree branch. An artistically-executed design with both birds featuring turned heads, the left bird with "hollow" tail to draw a distinction from the bird behind it. Slip-trailed script "5" to shoulder. Cobalt highlight to maker's mark. Desirable size, maker, and color, with a design closely-related to motifs employed by the illustrious Burger family of Rochester, NY. A 7/8" surface chip to reverse near base. A horizontal crack through handle and a second, shorter crack through handle. (Handle was not broken and reglued.) Otherwise various minor flaws, including the following: a small worn spot to handle, some minor wear to interior of spout, a few short, faint surface lines from spout, not visible on interior, some light surface wear, two small in-the-firing pings near base on reverse, a 3 1/4" surface line to underside, a 3/4" iron ping to underside, and some fairly innocuous bubbling to cobalt. H 18 1/2".
