Five-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Foliate Decoration, probably NJ origin, circa 1855, ovoid jar with heavily-tooled shoulder, squared rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a large foliate motif composed of numerous curved slip-trailed strokes. Reverse inscribed with a large cobalt "5." between two flourishes, each incorporating four small flowers. A long, diagonal in-the-firing crack from base, extending to midsection of left side of jar. A 4 1/2" vertical crack from base on left side of jar. Numerous small, shallow chips to rim on front. A 1" in-the-firing rim chip on reverse and a few other small, post-firing rim chips on reverse. Residue to interior.
