Very Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration and Combed Incising, probably Bissett Family, Old Bridge, NJ, early 19th century, ovoid jar with rounded rim and applied semi-lunate handle, decorated around the shoulder with combed wavy incising above a single, wavy incised line. Front decorated with a brushed cobalt floral motif. Reverse with unusual cobalt columnar decoration. Cobalt highlights to tops of handles. Based on archaeology undertaken in Old Bridge around the middle of the twentieth century, this is a rare, intact early period Bissett jar, made around the outset of their shop, in the mid 1810's. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor decades ago. Chipping and a glazed-over flake to left handle. A large chip to right handle. A slight dent to shoulder on front. A small base chip on reverse. Some in-the-firing flaws to surface.
