Fine Three-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Watchspring Decoration, New Jersey origin, circa 1770-1790, ovoid jar with footed base, tooled shoulder, and open loop handles, decorated on the front and reverse with a scrolled watchspring with foliate devices emanating from the top and bottom. Very nice condition for a piece of this age and origin. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor decades ago. Shallow chipping to base. Shallow rim chips. A smooth, 1 1/2" in-the-firing contact mark to one side. Some short surface lines to base, not visible on interior.
