Rare Three-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Impressed Floral Decoration, Inscribed "AC", attributed to Josiah Chapman or Xerxes Price, Troy, NY or Sayreville, NJ origin, early 19th century, ovoid jar with footed base, heavily-tooled shoulder, tall collar, and applied lug handles, decorated on the front and reverse with an impressed and cobalt-highlighted tulip motif flanked the incised and cobalt-highlighted initials, "A C". Brushed cobalt highlights to handle terminals. This jar is the first hand-inscribed piece that we have seen from this group of early, stamp-decorated pieces, which have been alternately attributed to both Price and Chapman. The initials, "AC", offer the possibility that this jar was made by Josiah Chapman as a presentation piece for a member of his family. Very nice condition with two shallow flakes to rim, three base chips, a minor in-the-firing iron ping to midsection, and some old whitish residue to underside.
