Rare Three-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Incised Decoration, Stamped "C. CROLIUS / MANUFACTURER / MANHATTAN WELLS / NEW-YORK", early 19th century, ovoid jar with footed base, tooled shoulder, and open loop handles, decorated on the reverse with an incised foliate motif, highlighted in a slip mixture of cobalt and manganese, featuring unusual incised negative space to the outer leaves. Front impressed with large Clarkson Crolius, Sr. maker's mark, surrounded by a heart-shaped wreath, applied with the same slip mixture as on the reverse. Additional highlights to maker's mark and handle terminals. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor decades ago. Crazing to midsection on front, not visible on interior. Tight cracks descending from rim to shoulder on reverse. Several rim chips. Heavy chipping to base. A glazed-over 1 3/8" iron ping to incised decoration.
