Fine Two-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar with Impressed Drape-and-Tassel Motif, Stamped "COMMERAWS / STONEWARE / CORLEARS / HOOK", Manhattan, NY origin, early 19th century, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, footed base, and open loop handles, decorated on the front and reverse with an impressed and cobalt-highlighted drape-and-tassel motif. Impressed on the front and reverse with the cobalt-highlighted maker's mark, "COMMERAWS / STONEWARE", and "CORLEARS HOOK". A classic example of stoneware by African-American potter, Thomas Commeraw. Brushed cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Provenance: Collection of Harry Meyer, McDonald, PA. A Y-shaped crack on underside, continuing 8 1/2" up side of jar, where it forms a second Y. A tiny, in-the-firing surface chip to shoulder. A small in-the-firing chip to top of rim. A small in-the-firing stone ping and light surface wear to front. Two shallow base chips. Some exfoliation to underside.
