Shenandoah Valley Multi-Glazed Redware Pitcher and Bowl Set, attributed to J. Eberly & Co., Strasburg, VA, circa 1890, wheel-thrown pitcher with footed base, upswept spout, and ribbed strap handle with applied thumbrest and spurs. Surface dipped in cream-colored slip with overlying streaks of copper and manganese and covered in a clear lead glaze. Bowl with strap handles embellished with faux screwhead terminals and applied balls of clay, the rear of the bowl with applied soap dish surmounted by "fiddlehead" scrollwork flanked by balls of clay. Surface of bowl dipped in a cream-colored slip, decorated with streaks of copper and manganese and covered in a clear lead glaze. Provenance: From a Virginia estate. Pitcher in excellent condition with a 1 3/4" line vertical surface line at base on reverse, continuing 1" onto underside and not visible on interior, as well as some minor edge wear to reverse of foot. Bowl in very nice condition with a shallow, filled-and- colored 1" chip to rim of soap dish and two other small colored chips to soap dish, a small chip and minor wear to front edge of bowl, some typical light wear to interior base, and some small in-the-firing contact marks to underside of foot.
