Unusual Five-Gallon Southern Stoneware Churn, Incised "Patent applied For", Georgia origin, late 19th or early 20th century, semi-ovoid form with tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and distinctive raised inner rim, the surface covered in a dark-brown glaze applied over reddish clay. Shoulder incised "Patent applied for" on one side. Rim of reverse side was pierced with a single hole prior to firing, probably involved in holding a lid in place. A few minor rim chips on reverse. Several small, shallow chips to inner rim. An area of surface wear to right side of churn's front. Some edge wear to right handle. H 17 3/4".
