Rare Six-Gallon Stoneware Churn with Cobalt Leaping Deer Decoration, Stamped "J. BURGER, JR. / ROCHESTER, N.Y.", circa 1880, ovoid churn with tooled shoulder, flared collar, and applied lug handles, decorated with an elaborate slip-trailed design of a deer with large rack, leaping from a stylized ground with tree. Excellent detail to deer's body including spots throughout and striped details along the edges of the animal's form. Slip-trailed "6" to shoulder. Brushed cobalt highlight to maker's mark. Includes a salt-glazed stoneware lid, inscribed "14" in cobalt on underside. The finest example of deer-decorated stoneware by John Burger, Jr. that we have ever offered. Restoration to section of right handle. Restoration to an approximately 2" x 3/8" rim chip on reverse. Some small spots of bubbling to cobalt. A tiny base nick. Tiny chips and wear to inner rim for lid. Typical wear to Albany slip on interior base from use as a churn. Lid with chips to central opening, a small chip and tiny nick to outer edge, and a 1 3/4" U-shaped crack to edge. H 20".
