Very Rare Charleston, South Carolina, Rebekah at the Well Yellowware Teapot, Impressed "CHAS' / GALA, WEEK / 1888 / COMPLIMENTS / OF / CHINA, HALL", Marked "FIRE PROOF / S.P. Co.", probably Speeler Pottery Company, Trenton, NJ, 1888, molded teapot with relief decoration of "REBEKAH AT THE WELL", the surface decorated with streaks of green, brown, and red over a yellow ground. Shoulder impressed with the cobalt-highlighted inscription, "CHAS' / GALA, WEEK / 1888 / COMPLIMENTS / OF / CHINA, HALL". The impressed advertising on this example indicate the teapot was made as a souvenir for Charleston, South Carolina's Gala Week of 1888. The impressed maker's mark on the underside, which reads "FIRE PROOF / S.P. Co.", was used by the Speeler Pottery Company of Trenton, N.J.. The teapot includes its original glazed lid with relief leaf motif. One of two examples of this form that we have seen bearing advertising for Charleston, SC's China Hall, in celebration of the city's annual Gala Week, this teapot being the finer-conditioned of the two. Provenance: A recently-discovered example. Very nice condition. A chip and minor wear to spout. A tiny chip to one applied prong at rim, which holds lid in place. Minor wear to opposite prong. Small chips to inner rim where lid rests. Lid in excellent condition. H 4 7/8".
