Scarce and Fine One-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Impressed and Coggled Decoration, Stamped "WARNE & LETTS 1806 / S. AMBOY. N. JERSY", Thomas Warne and Joshua Letts, South Amboy, NJ, circa 1806, ovoid jar with footed base, heavily-tooled shoulder, and open loop handles, the rim decorated with a coggled column motif with serrated edge. Front of jar decorated with an impressed and cobalt-highlighted drape motif, below the large maker's mark of Thomas Warne and Joshua Letts. Brushed circular highlights appear at the handle terminals. Exceptional in color and condition, this jar is one of the finer examples bearing this desirable, early New Jersey mark that we have ever offered. Provenance: A recently-surfaced example, which descended in the family of the consignor. This jar survives in rarely-found, excellent and essentially as-made condition with an in-the-firing contact mark to front and reverse of one handle, both involving shallow chipping and a small piece of adhered clay.
