Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Baltimore, MD origin, circa 1820, ovoid jar with footed base, semi-rounded rim, and applied tab handles, decorated on the front and reverse with a thickly-brushed or slip-trailed design of a flowering plant including leafy stems emanating from its four-petaled blossom. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Variants of this motif can be seen in the incised work of influential Baltimore potters, Henry Remmey, Sr. and Jr.. A chip to each end of one handle. A small chip to end of opposite handle. A tiny base chip. A very faint surface line extending across underside and approximately 1 1/2" up base of jar, not visible on interior. Some traces of old red paint to surface.
