Rare and Fine Two-Gallon Lidded Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Deer Decoration, Stamped "C.W. BRAUN & CO. / BUFFALO, NY", circa 1870, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, flared collar, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a deer with turned head, spotted body, and large rack, standing on a stylized ground between two bushes. Light cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Includes fitting salt-glazed stoneware lid, possibly original to the jar. A desirable Braun motif, modeled after John Burger pieces from Rochester, NY. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, found in the Buffalo, NY area in the 1970s or 1980s. Jar with large curving crack from rim on reverse, two shallow rim chips, and some minor nicks to interior of rim. Lid with two shallow rim chips and some minor surface exfoliation.
