Four-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Foliate Decoration, attributed to William Nichols, Poughkeepsie, NY, circa 1823, ovoid jar with footed base, tooled shoulder, and applied lug handles, decorated on the front and reverse with a distinctive brushed foliate design featuring splayed leaves. Brushed cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor decades ago. Numerous small rim chips. Chips to shoulder molding. A 1 1/2" hairline from rim. Base chips including an approximately 1 1/2" flake to underside at edge. A 2" horizontal surface line near base, not visible on interior. Exfoliation to interior.
