Exceedingly Rare and Important Redware Presentation Jar with Incised Bird Decoration, Inscribed "Wm. Maccartors Property July. th 3: 1835", attributed to David Mandeville, Circleville, Orange County, NY, 1835, ovoid jar with footed base, semi-squared rim, and rope-twist handles, the surface decorated with tooled banding along with an incised wavy line at center. Shoulder featuring an incised design of a ring-necked bird, perched on a leafy branch on one side, and an incised numerical inscription on the reverse. Midsection incised with large cursive inscription, "Wm. Maccartors Property July . th 3: 1835". Surface covered in a streaky lead glaze, featuring a colorful olive ground with orange spotting and dark reds and oranges at base. Featuring an incised bird decoration reminiscent of a New York State stoneware motif, as well as a presentation inscription with near Independence Day date, this jar is believed to be the finest example of New York State redware to come to auction in the last decade. It is one of a few surviving presentation jars made by Circleville, NY potter, David Mandeville. Provenance: Ex-Christie's. Wear to handles. A reglued 1 7/8" rim chip, including a shallow chip on interior of reglued piece. A filled 1" rim chip. Other rim wear. Wear to handles. Expected minor wear to midsection. H 9 1/2".
