Three-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Signed "[H] Lowndes / [Manufacturer] / Pe[tersburg] Virginia", circa 1840, ovoid jar with semi-rounded rim and applied lug handles, slip-trailed on one side with a faint, and largely absent, Henry Lowndes signature. Reverse decorated with a brushed and slip-trailed variation of the Lowndes "tree of life" motif, featuring six flowers emanating from a central point. Brushed cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Significant restoration to floral-decorated side, including repaint to bottom half of decoration. This restoration extends onto the underside, as well as partway onto the left and right sides of the jar, and includes a 3" unrestored line extending onto the reverse. Two chips to one handle. A small chip to opposite side. A few in-the-firing chips to underside along edge of jar. One handle with two shallow chips and a glazed-over chip. Opposite handle with a minor nick. In-the-firing contact marks to reverse.
