Exceptional Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Sunflower Decoration, Stamped Twice "T R WADDEL / VA", Alleghany County, VA origin, mid 19th century, ovoid jar with flared collar, flattened rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a brushed folk art design of a sunflower with spotted blossom, undulating stem, and large leaves, emanating from a stylized ground. Brushed cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Impressed with the maker's mark of Thomas R. Waddel at the shoulder on the jar's front and reverse. The vast majority of signed Waddel stoneware lacks cobalt decoration. This jar, set apart by its wonderful sunflower motif, is the finest example of Waddel stoneware that we have ever offered. Its expressive design cannot be linked stylistically to any other Virginia potting school. To our knowledge, this motif is additionally unknown in Waddel's body of work and unique to this piece. Heavy chipping to rim. A top-to-bottom crack from rim on reverse, extending onto underside. Chips to one handle. A chip and light wear to opposite handle. A few minor base chips.
