Very Rare One-and-a-Half-Gallon James River Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Swag Decoration, attributed to Moro Phillips and Sanford Perry, Trees Point Pottery, Charles City County, VA, circa 1849-1853, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder and tall, squared rim, decorated around the shoulder with three groups of large graduated swags. Shoulder additionally impressed with a distinctive one-and-a-half-gallon capacity mark used at the Trees Point Pottery. Very few examples of intact stoneware from this short-lived site have been recorded. A closely-related example was featured in the exhibit, "From Kaolin to Claymount: Demystifying James River Valley Stoneware", held at the Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts, Winston-Salem, NC, Nov. 2012- Mar. 2012. Provenance: Recently-discovered in Virginia. Shallow rim chips. Otherwise excellent condition.
