Very Rare Four-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "T & J DUCEY / MANUFACTURERS / PETERSBURG, VA", circa 1860, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with an elaborately-brushed flowering plant design flanked by swags, applied over slip-washed clay. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Albany-slip-glazed interior. An exceptionally rare James River maker, exhibiting Lowndes-inspired decoration. A tight Y-shaped crack on underside, which appears to be in-the-firing. This crack extends approximately 3" up base of jar on reverse. A small rim chip on reverse with a faint, approximately 3 1/2" line descending from rim. An approximately 11" tightly-sealed crack to far left side of jar's front, not affecting decoration. A very thin, approximately 5" sealed crack descending from a rim chip on reverse. A second very thin, approximately 7" sealed crack from rim on reverse. A small in-the-firing contact mark / chip to reverse near base.
