Very Rare Iron-Slip-Decorated Stoneware Ink Bottle, Stamped "THE A.E. SMITH'S SONS / POTTERY CO. / 68 PECK SLIP, N.Y.", circa 1875, small-sized, cylindrical bottle with tapered shoulder and squared spout, the surface dipped in a reddish-brown iron-oxide slip and covered in a salt glaze. Molded after English examples of the form, this ink bottle features a highly unusual Smith family maker's mark, in which the firm name "THE A.E. SMITH'S SONS POTTERY CO." is used, not seen on the pottery's commonly-seen ware. Provenance: From a recently-surfaced NC collection, purchased by the consignor decades ago. Very nice condition with some in-the-firing residue to underside along edge, a 1/2" chip to bottom edge, and a 1/2" in-the-firing chip to underside. Additionally, an area of in-the-firing dryness to surface and some in-the-firing raised spots to clay. H 5 1/4".
