Rare and Fine Three-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Large Incised Bellflower Decoration, Stamped "J. REMMEY / MANHATTAN-WELLS / NEW-YORK.", early 19th century, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, slightly-flared collar, and open loop handles, decorated on the reverse with an incised and cobalt-highlighted bellflower design with splayed blossom emanating from a drooping stem with thin, curving leaves. Front impressed with large John Remmey III maker's mark, highlighted in cobalt slip. Additional large, circular cobalt highlights to handle terminals. The floral motif on this jar is among the largest and most artistic that we have seen on a piece of John Remmey III stoneware. It may have been executed by John Remmey III's brother, Henry Remmey, Sr., as the design on this jar relates to Remmey's later work, produced in Baltimore circa 1815. Its bellflower design, seen on a small number of other John Remmey III, may have been inspired by Federal design elements of the period. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor decades ago. One handle restored. Large in-the-firing iron ping to maker's mark, which is glazed over. Other lesser firing flaws to surface, characteristic of pieces of this age and origin. Chipping to interior of rim. A chip and several tiny nicks to exterior of rim. Base chips.
