Fine One-Gallon Vertical-Handled Stoneware Jar with Impressed Decoration, Stamped "COMMERAWS STONEWARE", Thomas Commeraw, Corlears Hook, Manhattan, NY, early 19th century, ovoid jar with footed base, tooled shoulder, and vertical strap handles, decorated on the front and reverse with an impressed and cobalt-highlighted drape-and-tassel motif. Impressed on front with the cobalt-highlighted name, "COMMERAWS", on the reverse with the word, "STONEWARE", used by African-American potter, Thomas Commeraw, at his stoneware manufactory located on Manhattan's Corlears Hook. Brushed cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Desirable form and maker. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor decades ago. A sealed crack extending across underside and approximately 6" up reverse. This vertical crack is crossed over by a horizontal circumferential crack to foot, indicating the base was likely reglued. A faint, approximately 4 1/4" X-shaped surface line, below the name "COMMERAWS", not visible on interior. An in-the-firing stone ping to base and shoulder. An additional base chip. Some fry to cobalt.
