Scarce Salt-Glazed Stoneware Inkwell, Stamped "C. CROLIUS / MANUFACTURER / MANHATTAN-WELLS / NEW-YORK", early 19th century, cylindrical form with tooled accents, the top surface fashioned with a central ink hole surrounded by three quill holes. While the vast majority of inkwells produced by Clarkson Crolius, Sr. feature his smaller, oval maker's mark, this example features a larger, four-lined mark, more commonly seen on his jars and jugs, which extends from top-to-bottom on one side. Excellent condition with a few minor, post-firing rim chips and a minor glazed-over rim nick. H 1 1/2" ; Diameter 3 3/8".
