Very Rare Three-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Pheasant and Stump Motif, Stamped "W-A-LEWIS / GALESVILLE-N-Y", circa 1858, cylindrical jug with tooled spout, decorated with an elaborate slip-trailed scene, featuring a pheasant with crest and long tail, strutting atop a heavily-shrubbed ground, facing a tree stump. Light cobalt highlights to maker's mark. Figural-decorated pieces from this short-lived operation are considered rare. The depiction of the pheasant on the ground, facing the stump as opposed to perching in it, is most unusual. One of the finest examples of W.A. Lewis stoneware we have ever offered. A 5 1/2" x 3 3/4" network of tight spider lines to left of decoration. A minor 1" line in spout, where spout meets handle. A minor spout nick. A few very minor in-the-firing chips to bottom edge, visible when jug is turned over.
