Two Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jars, James River Valley of VA origin, possibly Stephen B. Sweeney, Henrico County, VA, circa 1838-1868, one-and-two-gallon examples, both of ovoid form with squared rims and applied lug handles, decorated on the front and reverse with stylized brushwork composed of graduated dashes, along with cobalt highlights to the handle terminals. Provenance: Collection of Lorren Lambert, Staunton, VA. One-gallon jar with large area of restoration to rim on one side, and two small, unrestored chips to opposite side of rim. Two-gallon jar with thin sealed crack across underside, extending approximately 8 1/2" up body of jar, as well as minor unrestored nicks to handle and a minor rim nick.
