Half-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Tassel Decoration, James River Valley of Viriginia origin, circa 1820, cylindrical jar with tapered collar and semi-rounded rim, decorated around the shoulder with five brushed tassel or hanging foliate motifs. Desirable small size and appealing form, which is closely-related to earlier jars produced at the Benjamin duVal Pottery in Richmond, Virginia. This style may have been based on Old Bridge, New Jersey pieces of the period. A tight, inverted Y-shaped line from rim, measuring a few inches long, which includes two small flakes on interior along the crack line. Otherwise excellent condition. H 8 1/4".
