Very Rare Large-Sized Stoneware Bird Whistle with Cobalt Decoration, probably Midwestern origin, fourth quarter 19th century, slip-cast whistle in the form of a standing rooster on circular pedestal base with comb, waddle, and raised wing detail, the surface covered in streaks of cobalt slip under a clear salt glaze. Incised around base with the undecipherable code, "13 S Y9 B12 BK 4". Underside additionally incised "13 S". Exceptional form. Excellent, essentially as-made condition with a firing crack to underside and two short firing cracks to tail. Whistle is in working condition. H 5 1/2".
