Scarce Two-Gallon Stoneware Water Cooler with Incised Bird Decoration, Stamped "L. & B. G. CHACE / SOMERSET", MA origin, circa 1850, ovoid cooler with semi-squared rim, applied lug handles, and a rectangular bunghole, embellished with impressed and cobalt-highlighted screw heads; decorated at the shoulder with an incised and cobalt-highlighted design of two birds facing each other, accented with incised dots to the neck and tail, as well as impressed diamonds on the wings. Incised crosshatching to front near bunghole. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark, capacity mark, and handle terminals. This cooler includes a separate, reproduction pedestal base, made by contemporary potter, Susan Hanson. Some light exfoliation to surface of cooler. A minor worn spot to one handle. A thin, U-shaped crack at base, half of which extends to midsection of cooler on far right side of cooler's front, the other half extending to midsection on reverse. Crazing to base of cooler itself, where original pedestal would have been attached. Reproduction pedestal in excellent condition. H (including base) 15 3/4".
