Very Rare One-Gallon Stoneware Presentation Jug with Elaborate Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "HENRY HERSHBERGER", attributed to L.W. Minier, Mogadore, Summit County, OH, mid 19th century, ovoid jug with semi-squared spout, decorated completely around the body with a brushed stem bearing leaves and fourteen spotted tulips. Cobalt stripe decoration to handle and freehand cobalt stripe encompassing spout. Front of jug impressed with cobalt-highlighted name, "HENRY HERSHBERGER". The 1860 census shows Henry Hershberger, a farmer, living adjacent to the stoneware potter Lawrence W. Minier and his family in Mogadore. This jug, which differs markedly from the modestly-decorated ware that Minier typically produced, was most likely a specially-crafted item made by the potter for his neighbor. However, it is possible given the style of the impressed name--done in the manner of maker's or merchant marks--that Hershberger was actually the proprietor of the stoneware shop for a period, with the Minier family making the ware. A fine example of Ohio stoneware. Excellent condition with a minor spout chip.
