Fine Three-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Incised, Coggled, and Impressed Floral Decoration, attributed to Clarkson Crolius, Sr., Manhattan, NY, early 19th century, highly-ovoid jug with tooled neck and semi-squared mouth, the front decorated with a large flower, composed of coggled petals surrounding a central impressed blossom, emanating from an incised leafy stem. Bright cobalt highlights throughout decoration and accenting the handle terminals, set against an appealing, light-gray background. The impressed floral motif at the center of the petals leads to a firm attribution to Clarkson Crolius, Sr. A fine example of early Manhattan, which utilizes coggled, incised, and impressed decorative treatments. This over two-hundred-year-old jug remarkably survives in excellent, essentially as-made condition.
