Rare and Fine Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Incised Bird-on-Branch Decoration, Manhattan, NY origin, probably Crolius Family, early 19th century, highly-ovoid jug with footed base and tooled spout, decorated with an incised and cobalt-highlighted design of a bird with turned head, perched on a branch. Bird design includes scissored tail, incised details to wing, curved bump (cere) at base of beak, and circular eye, surrounded by lightly-incised dots. The branch on which the bird is seated includes leafy embellishments at the tip, which are based upon Manhattan foliate designs, and most closely resemble the work of the Crolius family. Brushed cobalt highlights to handle terminals. In-the-firing contact mark to front. Some salt residue to shoulder. A 3/4" in-the-firing surface chip to side of jug near base. A 3/4" chip to bottom edge, primarily visible on underside. A faint 2 1/4" hairline on underside, continuing 5 1/2" up front of jug.
